Moles (Nabi)

Moles are common skin growths caused by clusters of pigmented cells called melanocytes. These cells produce melanin, the substance responsible for skin color. Most people have between 10 and 40 moles, which can appear anywhere on the body, including the face, scalp, hands and feet.

Moles are usually harmless, but it's important to watch for changes in size, shape, or color, because these changes can indicate melanoma, a type of skin cancer. The ABCDE rule is a useful guide to checking for moles:

A. for asymmetry: one half of the mole does not match the other.

B for Border: The edges of the mole are irregular.

C for Color: A mole has multiple colors or an uneven shade.

D for diameter: the mole is larger than 6 mm.

E for development: the mole changes in size, shape or color over time.

Moles can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired later in life, often influenced by genetics and sun exposure.
